Nursing?

November 14-20 2010 issue.

The Philippine economy is reeling under the impact of the global recession, with growth rates slowing from 7.3 percent in 2007 to 4.6 percent in 2008 and a further steep decline expected this year. While the country is not as heavily reliant on exports as Singapore or Thailand, exports nevertheless averaged nearly 45 percent of GDP between 2003 and 2008. Thus, Bataan is part of that economic landlislide neither is the overpopulated nurses in the province.

One of Bataan's 1st class community is Limay, with 2 health centers in the town, one of it's priority is to maintain the healthy living currently experiencing by the Limayans today, but how about the nurses in the town? sure some nurses are hired to be a staff of the health centers, but what about the others?

In a research done by Genero Malaspacan, Limay Bataan has a population of 48,983 based on the NSO surveys of 2004, and 1,659 of them are registered nurses. This numbers seems small, but in the latter part of the research showed that almost 31% of the said population is unemployed and 23% are underemployed. giving it a 54% unemployment and underemployment rate.

I find that many nurses after a few years get stuck in a professional rut of sorts. They stop learning or even wanting to learn about new advances in medicine or new equipment that is being used in hospitals, or even new procedures. There is so much that goes on in healthcare on any given day it is literally impossible to keep up with the changes. Perhaps that’s the reason why so many nurses only go to classes that they are required to. Advanced cardiac life support, basic life support, or some of the specialty certifications that people have may be the only classes some nurses attend. I say nurses should get involved in doing nursing research. I say that nurses should have a five-year plan with respect to their professional career. I say nurses need to be active in their professional organizations and take an interest in improving their own abilities to care for patients.

At the end of the day many nurses will find a litany of excuses to come up with for why they can’t do something or didn’t do something. To those nurses I would say for all the things that they can’t do what can you do? So for nurses that are reading this that feel that their career is important and their professionalism is at stake, what are you waiting for? you got a lot more learning to do so it'll make you sure that you won't be begging for a job, but they want you there   -Limay bataan
